This month’s Star Mompreneur is Stephanie from The Spotted Monkey! The Spotted Monkey launched its e-tail store in November 2010. Initially inspired by two little beings known as Bug and Monkey, The Spotted Monkey was created by a mother and daughter team who know the importance of finding unique, fun and fantastic items. Read on to learn more about Stephanie and how to win a $25 Gift Certificate from The Spotted Monkey!
1. Tell us a little bit about you and what inspired you to start The Spotted Monkey?
I am the Mom of 3 littles – my precocious 3 year old daughter Ella, my rambunctious 2 year old son Hunter, and my precious 4 month old daughter Emerson. The Spotted Monkey was inspired by my two eldest children and launched before Emerson arrived. Together with my Mom, we opened the virtual doors of our online children’s boutique in November 2010, specializing in sassy stuff for spunky kids.
2. What is your ideal workday like?
I am incredibly lucky to be living in Canada as we have a one year maternity leave. I do not return to my full time position in social work until February 2012. Currently my days are spent with my kids, which is so wonderful. In the mornings they all accompany me to ship orders, but the bulk of the work is done once they are in bed.
3. On those impossible days, what keeps you motivated?
As I think any Mom-preneur would answer, it’s my kids. They are the reason I started the business, and they are the reason I continue to put my heart and soul into it. I want them to play, wear, create, and live with the most creative and inspirational products I can find. And once I find these products, I want to share them. I am also inspired to support other Mom and woman run business, as well as handmade.
4. Do you have mentors and role models who inspire you?
My children are my inspiration. They are why The Spotted Monkey was started. And my Mom. Which is why we decided to start the business together. My Mom ran her own business as a single Mom 25 years ago. Working as a family is something that is incredibly important to me and I hope that in the years to come my kids will be a part of this too.
5. What is the most satisfying part of being a Mompreneur? And what is the
I would say the most satisfying part is watching the unfolding of something that I have worked hard to create. Seeing it come to fruition in November was momentous for me. But even more satisfying than that has been the feedback and connection with our supporters. Connecting with our customers, suppliers, advertisers, fellow Mompreneurs, bloggers, and well wishers has been incredible. The least satisfying part has been learning how to do the books. I’m so grateful
for the guidance of our sensational accountant.
6. How do you balance being an entrepreneur and family life?
Sleep deprivation! Currently, all three of my kids are at home. When they are up, they are my priority. I don’t want to miss pretending, reading, painting, splashing, and creating with my kids. The time with them is so short. The majority of my work is done when they are sleeping. This gives me some time in the afternoon when they are down for their naps, and a lot of time at night once
they are in bed. However, when I’m working full time, all work is done at night. The other side of midnight is an incredibly productive time!
7. What advice would you give other moms considering starting their own
Be bold and do it. Follow your heart, your dream and your gut. The Spotted Monkey is my passion. I put my heart and my soul into it. Because I love what I do and I’m proud of it. At this point in time, the only way I am able to do what I love is to keep my day job. The juggling can be overwhelming at times, but I couldn’t imagine it any other way.
8. Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
Social media has to be my favorite tool. Through sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, you get to meet and get to know so many people. I have met some fantastic Mom bloggers, been introduced to amazing Mom networking sites, come across fabulous products, and made some worldwide friends too. The support and friendship from others through social media is priceless.
9. What are your future plans for The Spotted Monkey?
We love to find new products and companies that you may not have heard of. Yet. We will continue to devote ourselves to making these products available, as well as our continued efforts in supporting companies that are Mom and woman run, and eco and moral conscious.
